Choosing Careers Rooted in Compassion. Justice and Service
April 7th, 2025
Students attended Holy Cross High School’s first-ever Career in Service Panel, a presentation organized and led by Theology Teacher, Stephanie Durbin. Rooted in the mission of Holy Cross, the panel encouraged students to reflect on what it truly means to live out the values of compassion, service, and justice — not just in theory, but in action.
The conversation centered around the question: What does it look like to choose a career where helping others is at the heart of what you do? Whether it’s serving the vulnerable, advocating for justice, or making compassion a daily practice, the panelists shared how their professional journeys are shaped by these values.
Four guest speakers — Michael Kolakowski of KBE Construction, Michelle Morcey ’84 of Brass City Harvest, Shanda Hinton of RPX, and Jerard Bruzas of United Way of Greater Waterbury — shared powerful stories about challenges they’ve faced and how those experiences shaped their paths.
Each speaker highlighted how service and justice are not limited to specific roles or industries but can be integrated into any career. Through their inspiring stories, students were encouraged to see their future professions as opportunities to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
