Crusaders Participate in High School Mock Trial Competition
December 9th, 2024
Holy Cross High School's Mock Trial team participated in the 2024 High School Mock Trial with the Connecticut Bar Association on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Waterbury Superior Court. The students took on the roles of both prosecutors and defenders in a criminal case involving murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Over the past semester, they diligently studied rules of evidence, the unique aspects of the case, and the art and science of litigation, culminating in an unforgettable experience. The team competed against Ridgefield High School and Xavier High School. Students were guided by Attorney J. Paul Vance, Jr. '92, the club moderator, with assistance from Holy Cross High School President (and attorney), Dr. Thomas Pellegrino. Preparation for the competition began in September 2024.
“The idea came about when I was serving as a judge for the Connecticut Bar Association’s mock trial program for middle and high school students,” said Vance. “I suggested that the Holy Cross students get involved in the program.”
Building a case from the ground up is a true introduction to Law 101. The students learned to break down the case, decide what to include, and understand courtroom behavior, from presenting evidence to acting as witnesses.
“To be a successful trial lawyer, it’s crucial to speak confidently in front of others, think on your feet, and adapt to the unexpected,” said Vance. “It’s a blend of civics and performance art. Our first task was to help the students feel comfortable speaking publicly. We also discussed the importance of the burden of proof and its role in their arguments.”
The students gave it their all during the competition. Although they didn’t advance to the next level, they left even more energized to build this program. There are plans to establish the Mock Trial team as a permanent part of the school, with the goal of participating in future competitions for years to come.
This year’s participants included: Gio Velez ’26, Gio Santiago ’26, Nick Martinez ’27, Kyle Dufour ’25, Gavin Perrone ’25, Adrian Acosta ’25, Trey Vance ’28, Mackenzie Pierce ’27, Will Perez ’27, Cate Cruess ’25, Tom Cruess ’27, Oreana Paris ’26, Justine DiPasquale ’26 & Nico Soden ‘26.
