Mikayla Robinson’s journey into community service began in middle school when she set her sights on joining the National Junior Honor Society. As part of the prerequisites for the honor society, Mikayla needed to complete a certain amount of community service hours. That’s when she came up with the idea to collect food for those in need. She designed flyers and distributed them to local neighborhoods by placing them on doorsteps. Mikayla recently repeated this act for her hometown of Wolcott. Her goal was simple but meaningful: collect nonperishable items and canned goods to donate to local food pantries. In total, Mikayla and her dad gathered over 300 items, weighing more than 200 pounds of food. She knocked on doors and encouraged people to leave their donations by their mailboxes. making it an easy and accessible way for neighbors to give back. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Nearly 75% of the households they reached contributed. Mikayla and her dad took the donations to the Wolcott Food Pantry, where they were met with surprise and gratitude. The pantry staff had been notified ahead of time, but they weren’t expecting such a large contribution. Through this experience, Mikayla learned the true value of giving back. It wasn’t just about fulfilling a requirement—it was about being a good person and making a difference. It felt good to help others, and that feeling has stayed with her ever since. She and her dad plan to continue this tradition, aiming to organize at least one drive every year.
