Holy Cross High School to be Honored by Connecticut Green Bank

February 27th, 2025

Holy Cross High School is being honored with the Outstanding C-PACE Project award by the Connecticut Green Bank. The school will be recognized on March 7 at the 2025 Green Bank Awards Ceremony in Hartford .  This event celebrates Connecticut Green Bank's partners and outstanding projects from 2024.

Holy Cross is being recognized for its efforts in bringing solar power to the school, with 513 solar panels on the roof of Holy Cross High School going live in October 2024.  The solar energy project was just one component of the school’s commitment to the environment and to making the facility a more efficient, cost-effective consumer of energy.  The school’s Energy Conservation Capital Project which commenced in 2019 was broken down into several phases:

  • Repair and seal the roof of the 195,000 square foot facility over two stages;
  • Replace all lights in the building with energy efficient LEDS, controlled by motion sensors to ensure lights are only activated when necessary.
  • Replace the original cast iron oil burning boilers with a high-efficiency gas-based boiler system for both building heat and domestic hot water.
  • Remove and replace the end of life pneumatic thermostats and control valves original to the building’s construction with digital thermostats, further optimizing energy consumption efficiency by enhancing the ability to regulate temperatures in the building, along with outside air, to maximize comfort and efficiency.

Said Dr. Thomas Pellegrino, Holy Cross High School President: “All of us at Holy Cross High School are proud of this recognition. Faced with a number of challenges with our facility, we made an intentional decision to not just fix the problems, but to develop a comprehensive energy-saving, environmentally conscious program we can all be proud of.  Holy Cross has given much to all of us.  We are now giving back to it in a way that will hopefully benefit generations of students to come.”
