Student-Athletes to Play Division I Sports in College
November 21st, 2022
Student-athletes, Juliana Dane ’23 and Mya Zaccagnini ‘23 signed letters of intent to play Division I athletics at their colleges in the fall of 2023. Juliana will be part of St. John’s University’s soccer team. Mya will join Iona College’s basketball team.
Both have seen many successes during their high school athletic careers, least of which was winning a state championship on their respective teams.
Juliana (center midfielder) was a freshman when Girls’ Soccer took home their Class S State Championship in the fall of 2019. “It was such a great feeling,” she said. “We had great chemistry as a team. We worked really hard for that. I was also very proud that the team took home the state championship again (in the fall of 2021).”
After a sports injury, Juliana had to sit out of the 2021 state championship win. However, she played a major role during the team’s road to victory. She received physical therapy for her injury in Westport. “In addition to PT, the facility also had a gym. I really liked it there. My father is also a Physical Therapist and has his own business. Those experiences influenced my decision to study one of the health sciences in college.”
For Mya (point guard), the Girls’ Basketball team’s state win was a long time coming. They came very close to getting the title before. However, that was cut short with the arrival of the COVID-19 virus. “When it came around again, we wanted to live in the moment and have fun,” she said. “You never know if and when you are going to experience something like that again.”
Mya plans to study sports management at Iona. Since she was three years old, athletics has played a huge part of her life. She has memories of playing ball with her father and grandfather. “I want to stay as connected to sports as I can. I want to be an agent or a coach.”
