“To be eligible for acceptance, the ideal applicant must demonstrate the utmost moral character, academic excellence and physical prowess,” said Lt. Collins, “as well as being nominated from a sitting member of Congress…This is truly an extraordinary achievement and is indicative not only of Michael’s lifetime of hard work and dedication, but also the tremendous investment from all those who helped him reach this point.”
Michael was in the car with his mother when he got the official acceptance call from Lt. Collins. They were on their way to Massachusetts for a swim meet. “It was such an exciting feeling. I started crying when I found out.”
Michael was rewarded a full ride scholarship, valued at over $416,000. He will also have a guaranteed job offer with secured promotions into the future.
“Most of all, (his appointment) is a vote of confidence from the American people and this country’s leadership that Michael has what it takes to lead us in the future,” said Lt. Collins.
Michael developed a love for aviation when he was younger. He has fond memories of attending air shows with his family as a child. He became interested in joining the Air Force Academy midway through his junior year. He officially applied in July 2023. “I plan to study Aeronautical Engineering,” he said. “I love science and math. I have to serve after I finish at the Academy. I would love to work on the service and maintenance of the planes during that time. After that, I would love to develop planes.”
Kathy Bass, Service Academy Nominations Coordinator from the office of Senator Christopher Murphy, gave Michael a certificate of accomplishment on the Senator’s behalf. “The investment you have made in your education in fostering your intelligence sets a profound example for your friends and peers to follow,” read Ms. Bass. “Your aspiration to attend one of our nation’s military academies is a testament to your devotion to civil service and is an inspiration to all.”
