Crusaders Debate at Model U.N. Conference

December 19th, 2022

Over 1,000 Connecticut students from 40 schools participated in the Connecticut World Affairs Council’s Model United Nations conference. They discussed numerous issues through debate and diplomacy in a respectful and informed dialogue. Several students from Holy Cross High School’s newly-formed Model U.N. were among the participants.

“This conference is a simulation of a U.N. Summit,” said Dan Creem ’12, Science Teacher & Model U.N. Faculty Advisor. “We had to pick and represent a county as if we were in delegation.”

The Holy Cross High School Model U.N. chose Eritrea, a northeast African country on the Red Sea coast. They researched the country’s history, culture, finance and voting practices. From there, they chose a committee to participate on. Choices included economic development, child welfare, violence against women and disarmament. After all research was conducted, they wrote a position paper articulating the country’s stance on those issues.

They debated and discussed their position at the conference which was held over two days in December at the University of Hartford. The Crusaders interacted with students from other schools to submit resolutions.

“When I first entered the meeting I was very nervous about how I should act because of the formal environment and structure,” said Nathan Lee Oun ’25. “However, as the day progressed, I became more comfortable and began to have a lot of fun.”

“The students learned a lot from this experience,” said Mr. Creem. “We prepared, but didn’t know if we planned enough. They did a great job and held their own against the other schools. There was a lot of positive energy on the bus ride home.”

“Model UN is an excellent place to network, collaborate, and make friends with similar interests. I would absolutely recommend Model UN to anyone interested in politics, debate, and problem-solving,” said Nathan.
