Students Participate in the American Math Competition

November 15th, 2024

Holy Cross High School recently participated in the American Math Competition (AMC), hosted by the Mathematics Association of America. Twenty-four of our students took part in this challenging exam, which is known for being extremely difficult.

Beyond just testing mathematical knowledge, the AMC encourages students to think critically and approach problems from a different angle. It requires them to not only identify the mathematical process but to carefully analyze the way the questions are worded. The phrasing often demands deeper thinking and problem-solving skills, pushing students to go beyond simply applying formulas. This type of critical thinking has broader implications, helping students develop the ability to solve complex, real-world problems — a skill that is valuable both inside and outside the classroom.

Holy Cross has always participated in this math competition. In the past, students were selected based on recommendations from their teachers. However, under the leadership of math teachers, Karen Brough '84 and Halise Erem, a dedicated Math Club was developed to foster greater engagement. The club provides structured time for preparation, balancing rigorous practice for the competition with fun activities that bring levity and help instill a deeper love of math in the students.

The 75-minute test consists of twenty questions. Each correct answer earns 6 points, incorrect answers receive 0 points, and skipped questions earn 1.5 points. The test gives students credit for recognizing when they don't know the answer.

Although the test is designed as a competition focused on math, it also serves as a tool for students to assess their performance. How am I doing? Where do I fit in? Where do I stand compared to others across the country? Mrs. Brough and Mrs. Erem use it as an opportunity to show students that there are multiple ways to approach and solve a problem.

This year's participants included: Devin Cavanagh '27, Christopher Cugliari '27, David Mecca '27, Danei Pittman '27, Reia Prevalla '27, Kendall Raudenbush '27,  Surya Thapa '27, Giuliana Silva '28, Sara Audie '26, Erin Barry '26, Gina Barry '26, Ariana Flores-Montes '25, Bella Henao '27, Matthew Holland '27, Colin Mahoney '25, Reese McGarrity '26, Gabriel Mulla '25, Tran Minh Khue Nguyen '25, Gianna Purcaro '26, Mia Shaker '26, Siddartha Thapa '25, Lillian Torrance '26, Quynh Huong Vu '25 and Amber Wojenski '25.
